[Hasbrouck Heights], (April 2018) – For decades, members of the National Association of Realtors® have supported a free, open market that embraces fairness and equal opportunity for all buyers and sellers. Members of the Eastern Bergen County Board of Realtors® (EBCBOR) strongly support the Fair Housing Act, legislation first passed in 1968 and now prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status and national origin.

This year, EBCBOR members, joined Realtors® across the country to embark on a yearlong commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act to raise awareness for fair housing issues.

“Realtors® continue to recognize the significance of this important act and reconfirm our commitment to upholding fair housing law, as well as our commitment to offering equal professional service to all in their search for a home or property. Realtors® work hard to build strong communities and neighborhoods where all people can live and prosper,” said Basil Singh, 2018 EBCBOR President.

Over the years, NAR has developed educational information on diversity and fair housing laws, programs and resources that have helped educate Realtors® across the country on the importance of inclusive housing practices and the promotion of diverse homeownership. During the yearlong commemoration, NAR will further examine community fair housing issues and advocate for changes to the Fair Housing Act to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

As part of NAR’s initiative EBCBOR worked with different local organization within the community to educate the membership on the most pressing issues pertaining to Fair Housing focusing on three key elements: acknowledging the organization’s changing role in the fight for fair housing, understanding how we as a nation are constantly improving our commitment to fair housing and ways Realtors® strive to lead efforts to address fair housing policy issues.

The association held an educational seminar with industry experts to discuss some of the most current Fair Housing issues that are affecting communities not only across the country, but right in our backyard.

The topics that were covered during this educational seminar where specifically rent control, service animals vs. support animals, and ADA compliance. Since we are located in an area that is densely populated and diverse, it is imperative that our members are catering to the different cultures and groups without any prejudice and abiding to the Fair Housing Act and NAR’s code of ethics.  EBCBOR’s Equal Opportunity & Cultural Diversity Chair, Miriam Yu said “Every day, people face discrimination for many different reasons. As Realtors®, we have an opportunity and an obligation to make a difference by working toward eliminating discriminatory practice that prevents people from having access to fair housing. Since housing is a basic need, it should be our focus and goal to help achieve fair housing for all.”
